Hi I’m Carole, the face behind Keep Phytt!

I’ve been teaching individuals how to manage pain and improve movement with exercise for over thirty-five years as a physiotherapist.

I’ve been teaching local exercise classes for older people for several years now and would like to share what I do with more people.

I realised that finding an exercise class when you are young and healthy is easy. There is so much choice but when your health and movement start to change for the worse it is more difficult. What do you choose? Where do you go? Just when you need lots of encouragement and support you are on your own!

This is why I started Keep Phytt*.

What is Keep Phytt?

Local Keep Phytt classes bring together people with different abilities who want to stay independent for as long as possible. Our instructors understand the changes that happen with age and encourage everyone to work at their own pace in the class whether you are 60 or 90. The classes are designed by founder, Carole Simpson, using her many years as a practising physiotherapist.

Unlike other fitness companies we have regular physiotherapy support for your class. This means helpful and safe exercises with activities that will continue to make a difference in your life.

...it's OK - there's no lycra!

“I’d never been to an exercise class in my life. Carole cajoled me into the class when I was struggling with some backache. I found that everyone was like me. We turn up in our normal clothes- I often wear my jeans and a T-shirt, or a baggy pair of trousers because that makes it easier to move." Tim, age 72

...it's OK - there's plenty of time!

We recognise getting up from a chair takes some people a bit longer and co-ordination might not be as good as it used to be.

“I tried a Pilates class. I struggled to keep up as everything happened so fast and I got left behind. My friend suggested Keep Phytt and it’s just right. We work hard but at a slower pace. We have time to recover and to sort out our lefts and rights! I feel much more confident” Angie, age 73

“I loved my line dancing classes but I couldn’t keep up any more and I couldn’t hear the music or the instructions as my hearing isn’t as good as it used to be. I had to stop and I didn’t think I’d find anything else at my age (83) but then I found Keep Phytt. We have a good laugh in Keep Phytt. It has helped me walk better and quicker and stay active in my garden” Daphne 83

Then I thought “what would Carole tell me to do? I was so proud of myself because I managed to get off the floor. It was nowhere near as difficult as I had expected. I know this was due to the exercise classes making me stronger and giving me belief in myself.” Shobha 76

Supportive encouraging groups of fellow exercisers, all like you, and led by enthusiastic instructors who want to see you staying independent throughout the second half of your life. Together we’ll be taking small but positive steps towards feeling a whole lot better, both physically and mentally.

In most things we do in life we need a supportive community of family and friends to help us achieve and succeed. Not everyone has people around them to exercise with so that’s what we're creating.

You may feel too old or too unfit today but together, with the friends we make along the way, you are going to get stronger, get fitter and move more despite the aches and pains that age can bring.

We will hold our heads high, full of confidence that we can still Keep Phytt and enjoy life!

My back was a long term problem, for 40 years in fact, limiting me in every area of my life. When I started Keep Phytt I didn’t think it would make such a difference but it really has done. I no longer have to think can I, will my back let me…instead I’m surprised when it hurts and the biggest joy has been starting walking netball.

Jenny was hesitant too and this is what she said.


“I suffered with back pain for more than 40 years and as I approached 70 I was only able to walk indoors with the assistance of a walking frame. Carole suggested her classes as a way to exercise to strengthen my back. I found doing exercises on my own boring and like most people I didn’t make time for them. To start with the classes were hard. I had to keep sitting down when everyone else could carry on but after just a few weeks I could keep up and even better, my back pain disappeared. My walking frame went into the cupboard and hasn’t been out since. Without the back pain I was suddenly free to start other things, so I now play short mat bowls and walking netball.
